Care navigation is perhaps one of the most overlooked pieces of the healthcare puzzle. The key differentiator is who is paying the care navigator and for what end.

If it is left up to provider networks, that navigation is often toward services within their verticals at the highest billable rates, even if more appropriate and/or less expensive care is available outside of the network.

If it is from the payers then it is typically for in-network providers to keep rates down, even if more appropriate and effective care exists outside of their network.

If you’re leaving it up to your EAP or your carrier to direct employees to behavioral health treatment, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’re going to come across sub-par care.

Independent care navigation can blend both and be more patient-centered, including direct-pay relationships that could be not only more appropriate, but often also less expensive overall.
